What Does 60 Years of People Science Look Like?

How Does the Job Survey Work?

From our beginnings in the 1950s to the McQuaig tools organizations use today, our story has been shaped by a commitment to understanding people. Explore some of the milestones that have defined our journey over the past 60 years and beyond.

Pre-1960s

During WWII, Jack McQuaig volunteered for military service. His natural ability to assess people led to a role at an Officers Training Centre. After the war, he pursued his passion for psychology, earning a Master's degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Toronto in 1946.

He later established his own company, laying the foundation for what would become The McQuaig Institute.

1960s

In 1966, Jack McQuaig founded The McQuaig Institute of Executive Development in Toronto. After a decade of research and development, the McQuaig Word Survey was introduced to help organizations better understand candidates and make more informed hiring decisions. The Institute continued to build on Jack's early work in industrial psychology, establishing the foundation for the assessment tools we use today.

1970s

Growing in success, McQuaig introduced the Job Profile, allowing organizations to compare candidates against a defined benchmark for success in a role. Building on the Word Survey, this approach helped employers look beyond qualifications and experience to better understand how an individual's natural behaviors aligned with the demands of a job. It marked an important step in making hiring decisions more structured and informed.

1990s

In 1999, McQuaig launched its first online assessment portal, marking an important shift from paper-based assessments to digital tools. This made it easier for organizations to administer assessments and access behavioural insights. It also laid the groundwork for future innovations, combining decades of research with new technology to make assessments more accessible. That commitment to innovation continues today.

2000s

The 2000s marked another period of growth for McQuaig, with new tools designed to help organizations better understand and develop their people. In 2005, McQuaig introduced the Self-Development Survey, expanding the use of behavioral insights beyond hiring. This helped organizations support employee development and gave individuals a deeper understanding of their strengths and opportunities for growth.

2010s and beyond

McQuaig continued to expand beyond hiring with the introduction of the 360 Leadership Review in 2017. TeamSync followed in 2024, bringing behavioural insights into team collaboration. In 2025, McQuaig launched Maven, making assessment insights easier to access and apply.

Today, McQuaig celebrates 60 years of helping organizations better understand their people.
